I love all the little and big details of nature’s patterns and textures. They’re often the most beautiful, interesting things out in the world, don’t you think? This tutorial will go over some of my favorite things to paint. (i.e. “starry night”) A great exercise for all ages.

Starry Night Watercolor Tutorial

When you paint watercolors, the elements of your subject matter will make a difference on how you paint them. Some elements are easier to paint than others. Elements like texture, blurriness, tone and contrast tend to be easier to paint than things like color. Try to focus on the subjects that are the easiest for you to paint.

If you’re feeling a little stumped and having trouble mixing colors, try the color wheel or color triangle.

If you’re feeling a bit stuck with painting textures try a photo or impressionistic painting. For a simple exercise to get the brush moving, try painting a ball.

                The question is one of will. Whether or not our species is willing to endure the pain of learning to live together and solve the puzzle of a sustainable future.
                We are still relatively young in the universe. We may be 100,000 years old. Or 1 million years. That will probably never really be known. But we survive in spite of being a long-lived species. We can keep living for a long time.
                So we are different from the viruses that are our ancestors or the bacteria that are our cousins. The bacteria are only 7,000 years old. The viruses, only 3,000 years old.
                But, as our species, we will certainly outlive those bacteria. We will outlive the viruses.
                In essence, we are the only life ever found in another solar system. (Yes, there may be subsurface bacteria on Mars, there for a long time. But no one has evidence of surface bacteria for sure.)
                Even our evolutionary cousins, humans and Neanderthals, will be extinct. Because, no matter how insanely violent and violent they were, no matter how much they pretended to oppose each other, they never really lived happily, consistently together for long enough to evolve into significantly different species.

                Humanity is not truly separate from the world. If we could really be cut off from that ecosystem, which we are, we would not have any way to generate food, to have shelter, to make clothes, and to find fuel for a car.
