Robinson Crusoe on the Island of Despair is an adventure designed to challenge and motivate the player to work out (or play along) by himself, without needing help. He must learn to take care of himself, although he may find some help or comfort from other people and relationships. He must learn to deal with intense emotions, both the good and bad sides of his own character. But he must above all learn to survive alone on his island.

Content Review

At a glance it seems to me this game is designed to offer assistance to a player’s character, but I feel it’s only good as a personal journey. It’s only about the character and what he experiences, which makes it much more satisfying. From what I know about this game is that it’s really a combination of 2.5D with a text adventure storyline. It’s really much like an old style text adventure game, except that it’s actually an open area and instead of characters the text is going to be whatever the player wants or says. The game is not only good to encourage the player to become an adventurer and seek his fortune through the land, but it is also a great personal story of the character (like a lot of Scott Adams who wrote/produced this). This is kind of like Frogger, the more you walk and crawl through the game the further you come through the game.

I have to say that the pictures, audio, and animation are all realistic. It’s good to see that story telling is not just an art form for the past, but is also alive in the present. This is much like the recent film, The Secret in their use of motion capture technology. Unlike many of the other video games out there, Robinson Crusoe seems to be taking away from the average video game, which is the avoidance of physical action. The storytelling is also a very welcome change to many video games.

The Challenge/Gating System is good as well. There are different phases to the game where the player will be able to advance through a level as he achieves certain goals to the level. Each level is far more difficult than the last, and the gate is wider open the more difficult it is. Once the gate opens up it gives the player an opportunity to seek more and acquire more items to build a base (or get a home base) to help with his adventure. The player will also encounter stronger versions of previous foes, and will therefore have to work harder and better to survive them. In this way the player

Enjoy it while you can…maybe it’ll stick around if you don’t turn away from it… It wasn’t 2 years ago that this game made me rethink my stance on Massively Multiplayer games.

I did find it a far better role playing experience than D&D 3.5/BESM.

I dunno…i was thinking of it as redone over the years to meet the current standards. So i guess that they aren’t that much old.

It just reminded me of US/UK life in the 70s – loose regulations and delays have brought out the excesses in everyday life. Same goes for Nintendo’s Mario battle for the world, DS release not being as mathematically perfect as projected etc. A decisive final battle on a distant horizon?? For me, it was a great blast. Then they doubled the length of the quest, added lots of mini quests. Then they tripled it. I think they’re trying to make it clear that they’re not dumb like most other publishers but are still realistic about what the customer wants. The novelty
