AutoCAD was originally released in 1981 as an add-on product to Micrografx’s MGR/40. It was developed by Computer Graphics Ltd. (CGL), which was founded by Michael Fried, a British computer engineer and director of early CAD software companies, and Peter Page, an engineer at Micrografx. The name « AutoCAD » was derived from an acronym for Auto Complete and Design CAD. CGL’s first release was a single-operator version which could read and display raster graphics. It could be controlled using a mouse, or through hardcopy drawings sent to it.

In 1983, CGL was acquired by Autodesk, and the next year, Autodesk released AutoCAD as a stand-alone product. At that point, the product included features that were not available in MGR/40. The first two releases, which were available for DOS and the MS-DOS-compatible PC/AT, were designated Release 4 (R4). The initial price for AutoCAD was US$9,995.

With the release of AutoCAD in 1983, the product’s name was changed from AutoCAD to AutoCAD and the product’s official name became AutoCAD Release 4.

In October 1984, Autodesk released AutoCAD Release 5, which included a version for mainframe computers. AutoCAD Release 5 also marked the first commercial release of a graphics library on top of the ICL Sperry Spectrum

When should I use $_[0] for accessing an array’s elements?

I have been doing a lot of perl programming recently. In the past, I have used $a[0] for getting the first element of an array $a.
Recently, a colleague asked me why I had used $a[0]. I answered that it was because the array $a was passed as an argument to a subroutine and not as an array on the function’s own.
After thinking about it, I think it was a bad answer.
I really think the correct answer is that $_[0] is the correct way of accessing an array’s elements.
So my question is when should I use $_[0]? And in what circumstances should I use it?
