Perhaps the biggest surprise for me was the fact that many “tricks” are not workable. For instance, I tried adding text in the eye dropper tool. This did not work. Also, on a few occasions I wanted to easily crop a photo to a specific portion of an image. To accomplish this in Photoshop Elements I had to first place the photo inside a selection which I then edited to crop. You can also edit selections, but it is way too complicated, cumbersome and confusing, even for someone like me, who is not necessarily a designer but who enjoys playing with photo editing and then sharing the results with family and friends.
And have a look at the Social Media integration function that allows you to send a link to an image straight to Tumblr, Facebook or Twitter. I am also a lot more impressed by the ability to add filters and effects evenly across the whole image via a new My Filters panel. It is also impressively fast, in my experience. You can create or apply a filter from up to two dozen effects using the Edit > Preset Manager, or open a property panel for masks, rotate, straighten and fix. As with Lightroom, you can use the layers panel as a work space, though I was a bit disappointed that there were no quick and easy ways to resize and edit overlay. But it does give you an opportunity to insert or change layer masks. Many of these new features are easily accessed via the Crop tool. With the new Crop Tool, you can crop based on one or multiple regions, rotate and move things around. This new crop tool also preserves the original aspect ratio if you rotate an image 180 degrees. It is really that easy to use the new crop tool.
