Donald Fagen – The Nightfly Trilogy Torrent
Are the band planning any more live shows once the Kill Any Project is complete? Fagen admits that they would love to reconnect with the Doobie Brothers, but the band have no plans to reconvene. « We have fun together, but Musink is great, and we have records to make. It would be great to get together with the Doobie Brothers, but we don’t have any further plans than that right now because we are doing these three albums. »
Usually it’s after mixing that the producer listens to the final songs, but not for Fagen. « I don’t go back and listen to anything until I’m satisfied with the whole album, » he explains. « I don’t listen until it’s in my hands and in the audience’s hands. Once we got going on this, we went into the studio and went to it and continued to pursue the album. I hadn’t even heard the songs other than Elliot [Scheiner] trying to get my take on them. Once we had music that we liked, we mixed up and we constructed the album. In the case of Steely Dan, though, I guess we should say that I did play some of the songs for Michael [McDonald] before we mixed them. It was not a group effort. We just decided to play everything, and those who didn’t want to write went home. »
With such a distinguished back catalogue of albums to work from, Fagen admits he doesn’t always stay true to his original material, as evidenced by Fagen And Still By Water and Nightfly. « I think for this trio of albums, it’s been challenging to find fresh ideas. I don’t think you can really pretend to be lyrically authentic. That’s not the point of these three albums; it’s about the experience of being alive right now. These are any soul albums, at least, if they really are soul albums. »
