Plot

John Schnatter, the former Papa John’s founder and chairman, said in a statement Thursday that he made mistakes in his decision to publicly apologize for saying the N-word on a corporate earnings call in May.

« A few months ago I became a symbol of racial insensitivity, » Schnatter said. « For this, I apologize. »

Schnatter first apologized for the slur Wednesday, nine days before he faced shareholders at the company’s annual meeting, after a report in The Wall Street Journal said its sales had dropped because of his comments. He also said he had hired a black female consultant, who would now serve as his primary point person on diversity.

Schnatter’s comments came amid a national conversation about racial bias and diversity in the workplace.

Schnatter resigned as the chairman of the board of Papa John’s parent company, P. J. Snider, in June, though he remains a director of the company. In a 2014 Forbes profile, Schnatter was listed as the ninth-richest American.

In Thursday’s statement, he said there are no « silver linings » in the conversation about race, and that he’s learned from his mistakes and grown.

« Now I’m watching my language more carefully, » he said.

Schnatter will remain a member of the company’s board, the statement said. The company said his performance was fully intact in his resignation, and that he had signed a contract for his current board position.

Schnatter’s comments led to boycotts of the company’s pizza, which he founded in 1984, and caused revenues to slump and stock prices to tumble. The company, based in Louisville, Ky., recently said it would invest in marketing, digital advertising, distribution and store-presence in order to recover.

Schnatter had apologized for his comments in a statement released Wednesday, but had not explained them publicly, until Thursday’s release.

Schnatter, who was born in Brooklyn, New York, was a minor figure in the national conversation until his remarks were made public.
