Truckee () is a census-designated place (CDP) in Lake County, California. Truckee is located east-southeast of Lake Tahoe at an elevation of. The population was 5,832 at the 2010 census, up from 5,732 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Reno–Sparks Metropolitan Statistical Area.
History
Truckee was founded on August 18, 1849, by a group of emigrants from St. Louis, led by Peter French. The first sawmill was built in 1851 by a Swiss immigrant, Henry Fey, who had built a sawmill in Colorado. In 1852, the town was renamed after the turbulent Sierra Nevadas, in honor of Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, who happened to be natives of the area. The area was officially incorporated as the city of Truckee in 1864.
Historic Truckee
In 1859, Charles E. Baker established a sawmill at Truckee, the first in northern California. The city was the first major regional commercial center of what was then known as Washoe County, Nevada, and later became the unofficial capital of the State of Nevada. The city’s founder, French, was the first postmaster of the town, with the first post office established in Truckee in 1851. The town was the birthplace of the California Gold Rush. The Telegraph Route was opened between Reno, Nevada (the capital of Nevada at the time) and Sacramento, California in 1858 by Matthew R. Scott, who used his own steam locomotives to run between the two cities.
As the head of the Pony Express, Scott established Truckee as the center of the route between San Francisco and Sacramento and the all important telegraph line from Sacramento to the Nevada Territory.
Today, the city still has a locally famous depot museum, the Reno-Tahoe Railroad Museum, near the corner of Twain and Hunter streets. The museum was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2008.
