the best thing about this bond movie is the action. bond fends off and outwits a host of villains during the multiple international set pieces. the stunts are excellent. it’s an exciting bond film. the only thing that keeps it from being a bond classic is that it’s too long.

you might be inclined to think this is a remake of the man with the golden gun, but it’s not. it’s more along the lines of live and let die — a movie about a black man who is hired to steal an object from a white person. in this case, the object is a military drive that contains the names of mi6 agents, so it is a pastiche of the spy who loved me and live and let die. which has a certain amount of logic, considering that the villain of the man with the golden gun was a black man. the script does a fairly good job of switching points of view from silva’s to bond’s, and what a switch it is. silva is just a great evil villain. bond might be the character most spoiled by the terrible writers of the bond movies, because they’ve given him a lot of good things to do, and when they do something bad, they do it well. silva is just a brilliant guy to bad guys, who fits into the mold of the bond villain like a glove. he is a psychopathic killer who « cares » for no one, and who is as likely to use a gun to kill the world as to destroy an obstacle.

he is also a very good actor, and bardem is the only bond villain to be this good. a friend of javier bardem (i’m not kidding), daniel craig has had a lot of trouble with bond villains, because they usually think of him as a joke. silva, however, treats craig as if he were the perfect bond villain. a bond villain who has the best lines, a bond villain who has the best clothes, a bond villain who is more entertaining than a bond villain is supposed to be. silva laughs, and his evilness is funny, and he’s smart, and he isn’t going to kill craig. he knows how much craig has been teased, and he’s not going to be that guy. he’s going to play the game. even when he kills the girl, he does it in a way that the audience will identify with bond as the hero. silva may be a villain, but he’s a sympathetic villain, and that’s rare in the bond movies. the only other bond villain who was this sympathetic was dr. no, and i think that’s because john barry made him up as a teenager who was a victim. silva feels like a real person, and in that, bond has nothing to be ashamed of. i’ve seen him a couple of times since the movie came out, and he still has me laughing every time he comes on screen. silva isn’t supposed to be funny, but he is. he’s a force of nature.
