project summary: we address the problem of voltage regulation in a distributed system which involves ac grid-tie inverters, connected to the grid via local scr voltage-source-fuses, to power low inertia loads such as wireless sensor and actuator networks. the goal is to reduce the scr overvoltages experienced by the grid and to minimize the inverter stress, while satisfying the local constraint that the voltage magnitude and frequency meet the grid properties. in this class of problem, the modal space is made of two rigid constraints: 1) the system must stabilize within a given frequency band; 2) the constraints should be satisfied in the eigen space where the hessian is negative definite. the proposed solution, originating from the secondary-side pss algorithm, satisfies the first constraint by scheduling the voltage regulation on the inverter optimal control axis and the balancing on the secondary-side pss axis. the second constraint is satisfied by monitoring the system’s state in the unstable modes (eigenspaces where the hessian is positive semi-definite). finally, optimization is realized in the safe eigenspace using a trust region interior-point algorithm that guarantees convergence and scalability in linear-time.
