Results: Using a k fold cross-validation method, we obtained k = 5 as the best value for k. Our results demonstrate that there is enough information in the email metadata to classify a very high percentage (85.9%) of the emails. We believe that the lack of the actual email content provides the additional predictive power in our classifier. We discovered two types of emails in our test set: (1) spam email, and (2) personalized email.
Methods: To classify email into spam and non-spam categories, we used SVM, Random Forest, Naïve Bayes, and Decision Tree classifiers. We also considered four binary classifiers that can each classify either spam or non-spam. In our analysis we discovered a strong correlation between the number of words in the message and the spam likelihood of the email.
Results: We found the Naïve Bayes classifier, which uses the relative frequency of spam words in each email, yields the highest classification accuracy of 91.1%. We found the binary classifiers yield even higher accuracy for the email classification problem. Using five classifiers (Naïve Bayes, Random Forest, SVM, Decision Tree, and Multinomial Logistic Regression), the overall accuracy is 98.6%.
