the premise is loosely based on the true story of actor ha tae gyun, better known as dong wook, who died by drowning after jumping off a cliff at a mental hospital at the age of 33. the film, directed by lee joon hyung, follows the events of dong wook’s life as an aspiring actor and the relationship between him and his mentor, a former actor who lives in a nursing home following a stroke.

in this romantic comedy, a newly single man starts dating one of his high school classmates who currently works in a creative company. however, she is not easily enticed by the long-term benefit he provides. one night, he comes to her house and leaves with her sister’s engagement ring. he then gives her the ring to get her to accept his « love proposal », but she resists him. meanwhile, he begins having a recurring nightmare, in which he sees the face of his high school classmate and her sister.

in the seoul of the 1990s, a married man who has been fooling around with a young woman he met online is about to be exposed as an impostor. he resolves to keep his secret until her daughter, who is 10 years old, grows up. but as he tries to keep his secret, her daughter eventually finds out what he’s doing on the internet and he finds himself entangled in a web of conspiracy involving the father of a missing girl.

found this to be an entertaining, sometimes epic ride, that’s not an insult, even when the characters aren’t too well developed, they are more individual characters than people, but i think they need more hands than one on the wheel.

the most attractive thing about this movie was the actual movie. this movie is one of the many films in this genre, which is very heavy on characters and action. the producers did a decent job of balancing the two, considering this is a melodrama. the movie has the feel of an old western, complete with the young woman being sold off into slavery. as for the supporting cast, there are a few who are well-developed, such as park bo soo who plays the slave owner, tae oh han lee who plays the slave, and song hye gyo who plays the young woman. however, the most influential character in this movie is the female narrator who tells us the story of her father, who did all the evil things in the name of serving his country. her voice over is so well done that it’s impossible to forget about. as for the storyline, it’s a little bit scattered, but it is only around the 1.5 hours long.
