together, sysmac studio and cx-one form the heart and brains of any plc. when discussing information and instructions from sysmac studio, the terms in red are called intrinsic symbols and when discussing information and instructions from cx-one, the terms in red are called operand symbols. there are a few different names used by the software makers for intrinsic symbols and operand symbols, but if you work closely with the software as long as you can refer to intrinsic symbols by the manufacturer name, you should be fine. for example, omron calls intrinsic symbols “intrinsic symbols” and operand symbols “extrinsic symbols”.
this is why it is so important to be able to recognize intrinsic symbols from operand symbols. and conversely, operand symbols from intrinsic symbols. these intrinsic symbols can be found when you turn on the power on a plc. the header of your plc will indicate which type of symbol it is.

omron has a free version of their hmi software syswin. its the same basic software as cx-one, and is a good starter for the user. it does not have a feature set that has advanced programming features, but it is a good place to start. the same is true of syswin for robots, but there is a free trial version available.
omrons cx-one series of programmable controllers offer a lot of hmi and programming features. they are getting more sophisticated each revision. the newer generation cx-one models are more intuitive to use, and have more advanced features. the older generation models are more about programming features. sysmac studio offers the same features, and is the easy entry point into the omron product line. the older cx-one models are best for beginners.
omron offers sysmac studio for hmi, robots, and plcs. sysmac studio is an easy-to-use programmable controller software. it offers a familiar hmi experience, and can be used to program machines built with omrons older cx-one models. sysmac studio has a free version, but it does not include simulation or the ability to upload files. the free version is great for learning the software and testing out different things before you invest in one of the paid versions.
