The third time we did this Scorpio Nights cast was one of my very favorites. Which is in no uncertain terms. for two of the reasons, we were all young and that film was incredible and Cristine. I remember when Ojeda won the Cinemalaya in ’98 for those two if not more than that. Sco-Scorpio nights certainly had a reputation. Much of which were true. And we both rocked in those films. I have nothing bad to say to him, more like a compliment.
I was one of the first Filipino directors to jump into the niche, so to speak, of the MTV generation. It was not only the gimmicks that the MTV generation adores, but its kind of the sexy simplicity of the Scorpio Nights movies that captured the new Filipino audience. Audiences did not have any preconceived notions of what an erotic film should be. The fans of action and horror movies are now embracing the erotica movie. I was the first to understand that.
A dying movie industry that gave birth to a plethora of video tributes and internet piracy was what Poe predicted. I do not think I will work in a movie industry that does not pay you anymore. A movie mogul told me that I am just a pretty face, but they will never be able to pay me, Fernando explained. I am more interested in steady work that pays a decent salary.
Fernando Poe, Jr. is one of the best action actors of all time and there are countless scenes of him doing action in Scorpio Nights. I used a lot of his moves when I was in action scenes. Dont expect to see me doing action because it is beyond me, he said. But most of the dialogue was improvised. We would hit a car and then I would threaten the guy and the problem would be solved.
The controversial part of Scorpio Nights 3 is how it was financed. The original featured an all-male cast, including Gabriel Echeverria, who wrote the script. And a few scenes were shot on location with a beautiful beach. Filming were well-financed by another famous Pinoy director, Jaime Fons.
The story of this particular remake is somewhat different from the original. But they still come from the same scenario. Which is the love affair of a middle-aged woman with a young man. In the original film, it was a bisexual woman. In Scorpio Nights 3, it is a married woman who is obsessed with young men. In the original, she seduced one of her employer’s sons, who had a crush on her. In the remake, it is a client. Therefore, even though the characters are different, the story remains the same.
The movie angered Filipinos who want to see more of Daniel Fernando’s chest as well as those feminists who demanded an end to censorship on the country’s sexually explicit movies. Rated R for sensuality, Scorpio Nights was the highest grossing Philippine movie of that year and still ranks as one of the top 10 highest grossing Filipino movies of all time. [3]
The success of Scorpio Nights led to Fernando’s next film in the same genre. The film, Macho Dancer, which grossed $33 million, earned him an entry into the Guinness World Records as the first person to appear on the cover of a magazine fully nude in an international film festival. This came after Gov. Wilfrido R. Sy Alvarado vowed to repeal the country’s Obscene Movie Law and allow more X-rated films in the country, thus breaking a three-decade ban on pornography.
