Activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis in response to stress has been shown to be under the control of endogenous opioids. This study examined the relationship between adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), cortisol, and endogenous opioids after a standardized stressor (combat situation) in elite infantry soldiers. In a randomized block design, 25 elite infantry soldiers (mean age 21.2 +/- 1.6 years) were exposed to their qualification (QM) test in 12 h or (consecutive) 12-h (C12h) combat-stressor simulation (CSS). At 0, 8, and 14 days after stress, blood samples were collected to determine ACTH, cortisol, beta-endorphin (beta-END), and beta-lipotropin (beta-LPH) levels by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). There were significant increases in ACTH and cortisol concentrations and beta-END levels during the CSS in comparison with the QM test. There was a significant increase in beta-LPH level between 8 and 14 days after stress. A significant negative correlation was found between ACTH and beta-LPH levels at 8 days after stress. Moderate to severe levels of psychic and somatic symptoms were reported during the CSS. An increase in endogenous opioids may have played a role in the endocrinological reaction to stress.The United States will continue to supply funding under the Coalition Support Fund (CSF), and Canada will continue to receive joint armed forces funding, the White House said in a statement.
