MySQL update and insert both values at a time

I have a program written in python which interacts with a database (MySQL) and it is works well when I use the command « UPDATE » only, but not if I use « UPDATE and INSERT » together. I want to find a way to have the same effect with « UPDATE » AND « INSERT ».
This is my SQL command:
def updatenew(self,som):

self.db.query(« UPDATE Categories SET name=’%s’ WHERE
id=’%s' »%(som,self.som))

If you want to do multiple operations, you can use a single statement (as @ChrisStratton suggested):
self.db.query(« UPDATE Categories SET name = %s WHERE id = %s », [som, self.som])

When using a single statement, the python interpreter is responsible for ensuring the order of operations. If you try to update a row with an update statement, and then insert a new row, it will insert the new row before the update. In the multi-operation case, the order depends on the execution order of the database engine.
If you want to be sure that the update and insert happen in the same order, you should use 2 different statements:
self.db.query(« UPDATE Categories SET name = %s WHERE id = %s », [som, self.som])
self.db.query(« INSERT INTO Categories (name) VALUES (%s) », [som])
